What is National Police Week?
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 to be National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week on which May 15 occurs to be National Police Week. National Police Week, established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty for the welfare and security of others. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) will be will be commemorating National Police Week in 2021 with virtual events that can be viewed from anywhere in the world (NLEOMF, 2021).
The 33rd Annual Candlelight Vigil is scheduled to happen virtually on Thursday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. CST (8:00 p.m. EST).
In-Person Events Rescheduled
Due to the pandemic, the in-person events normally scheduled for National Police Week have been postponed until October 2021. The in-person events are scheduled as follows:
- Thursday, October 14, 2021 – NLEOMF Candlelight Vigil
- Friday, October 15, 2021 – Concerns Of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) National Police Survivors’ Conference
- Saturday, October 16, 2021 – Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) 40th Annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service
